Ali Ezzati

Introductions: The Basics of AI

Dr. Ali Ezzati is an Associate Professor of Neurology and the Director of the Neuroinformatics and Neurological Data Science program at the University of California, Irvine. After finishing his medical school, he pursued two postdoctoral fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Subsequently, he completed his Neurology residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in New York. He was a faculty at Einstein before joining UC, Irvine, in 2023. Dr. Ezzati’s research expertise is in neurological data-science with a focus in headache disorders as well as cognitive neurology. His lab specializes in harnessing Big Biomedical Data to revolutionize diagnostics, prognosis, and therapeutic strategies in neurological disorders. Dr. Ezzati receives research support from prestigious organizations, including the National Institute of Health, various foundations, and industry-sponsored investigator-initiated studies.

Nigam Shah

Keynote: AI in Healthcare: Revolution and Regulation

Dr. Nigam Shah is Professor of Medicine at Stanford University, and Chief Data Scientist for Stanford Health Care. His research group analyzes multiple types of health data (EHR, Claims, Wearables, Weblogs, and Patient blogs), to answer clinical questions, generate insights, and build predictive models for the learning health system. At Stanford Healthcare, he leads artificial intelligence and data science efforts for advancing the scientific understanding of disease, improving the practice of clinical medicine and orchestrating the delivery of health care. Dr. Shah is an inventor on eight patents and patent applications, has authored over 200 scientific publications and has co-founded three companies. Dr. Shah was elected into the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) in 2015 and was inducted into the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) in 2016. He holds an MBBS from Baroda Medical College, India, a PhD from Penn State University and completed postdoctoral training at Stanford University.

Chia-Chun Chiang

AI and the Headache Clinician

Dr. Chiang is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She is board-certified and fellowship-trained in both Headache and Vascular Neurology. Earning her medical degree from National Yang-Ming University in Taipei, Taiwan, she then completed her Neurology Residency at Mayo Clinic Arizona, where she was awarded the Manfred D. Muenter Award for excellence in clinical neurology. Subsequently, Dr. Chiang pursued a Vascular Neurology fellowship at University of California, San Diego, and a Headache fellowship at Mayo Clinic Arizona. She also dedicated a year to AI research and training at the Stanford Human Artificial Intelligence Institute. Dr. Chiang's clinical and research interests are centered on the application of AI in the study of migraine and vascular neurology, as well as exploring the connections between headaches and various cerebrovascular/cardiovascular disorders. Dr. Chiang has received many prestigious awards, including the 2022 Early Career Award, the Emerging Leaders Scholarship Award, and the Frontiers in Headache Research Award from the American Headache Society. She has also published extensively in reputed journals, including Cephalalgia, Headache, and The Lancet Neurology.

Christopher Longhurst

Implementing AI Models in Healthcare: Practical and Ethical Considerations

Christopher Longhurst MD, MS, is the chief medical officer (CMO) and chief digital officer (CDO) at UC San Diego Health. This unique dual and complementary role provides leadership to medical staff, ensuring that standards and protocols are in place to provide the highest quality of care to patients, and positions digital transformation as a key tool in these efforts. As the executive Director for the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Center for Health Innovation, Dr. Longhurst also has responsibility for the artificial intelligence (AI) portfolio across the health system. As a faculty member in the Departments of Biomedical Informatics and Pediatrics, Dr. Longhurst also maintains an active clinical practice as a newborn hospitalist and vigorously pursues scholarship in care quality, patient safety, and informatics, especially healthcare AI.
