Auditing Post-Acute Care & Hospice Services: Obtain Comfort Providing Services Post-Hospitalization

Session Synopsis

Post-acute care services are a vital component of your health system’s continuum-of-care providing patients that no longer need inpatient hospital care for an acute issue with appropriate transitional rehabilitation or palliative services as they recover. Additionally, hospice services provide end-of-life care services to patients with terminal illnesses and their families. Post-acute care can be provided through a multitude of services including, but not limited to: Skilled Nursing Facilities; Rehabilitation Therapy; Home Health; Hospice; Behavioral Health; Swing Beds; and, Long-Term Care Hospitals. Providing high-quality, compassionate, cost-effective, and compliant care is essential to patients, their families, and your health system.

Post-acute care and hospice services face a multitude of safety, financial, operational, quality, and regulatory risks. Ineffective, inefficient, and non-compliant practices may negatively impact care, cause employee harm, disrupt operations, and result in financial loss or reputational damage to the organization. Identifying, addressing, and managing these risk areas will assist in reducing the threat to successful operations, compliant practices, and high-quality services.

During this session we will discuss examples of post-acute care and hospice services, examine operations, processes, and corresponding risk areas, and identify internal controls and documentation relevant to the delivery of high-quality, reliable, and compliance care. Attendees will also benefit from the experience gained by our Internal Audit Department during the execution of reviews of various types of post-acute care and hospice services.
