Rapidly connecting patients to lowest-risk pain treatment: Empowered Relief

    11:10 AM - 11:35 AM

    Presentation Description

A ‘whole person’ approach to headache management is recognized as best practices. However, clinicians rarely have effective, accessible behavioral options to offer patients. Brief behavioral intervention may begin to meet the needs of a population of patients and enable rapid access to lowest risk pain care. This session describes Empowered Relief, a 1-session pain relief skills treatment that was developed by speaker Beth Darnall, PhD. Empowered Relief is NIH- and PCORI-funded, with research showing non-inferiority to 8-session CBT at 3 and 6 months post-treatment. Empowered Relief can be integrated into clinical practice broadly or accessed by patients online. Efficacy data from 4 published randomized trials will be reviewed, along with ongoing studies focusing on migraine and other special populations.

Empower, Integrate, Educate: Other Non-Pharmacological Options

    11:35 AM - 12:00 PM

    Presentation Description

This presentation will provide an overview of what is integrative medicine and address the broader question of what it means to effectively integrate integrative medicine into a headache practice by exploring the benefits, challenges, and implications for patients, as well as, for providers. Within this context, we will explore a number of evidence-based, non-pharmacological treatments for headache disorders and examine different models of care that can deliver these treatment options to patients.
