Moving Beyond the Binary: LGBTQIA+ Advocacy

    1:30 PM - 2:00 PM

    Presentation Description

LGBTQIA+ patients face a range of health disparities, including stigma and discrimination in healthcare, lack of insurance coverage, and poor access to affirming care. Furthermore, sexually- and gender-diverse people appear to suffer from headache disorders at higher rates than cis-heteronormative people. I will discuss how it is important that we are all advocates for addressing these disparities. I will review the following: 1) discuss how to provide a welcoming and affirming clinical environment; 2) examine how to tailor headache management for those receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy; 3) discuss how to improve clinical research to address the knowledge gap in LGBTQIA+ headache care; 3) outline how we recruit and retain more headache provides who identify as LGBTQIA+.
