    Presentation Description

    Psychology of Leadership

This presentation for the emerging leaders program will give an overview of differing viewpoints on the psychology of leadership. Mainstream psychology has traditionally been mitigative focusing on getting less of what we don’t want such an anxiety and depression. Positive psychology is more constructive and valued in leaders dealing with topics such as optimism, hope, awareness, and communication skills. Various aspects of leadership will be discussed including the extrovert ideal, different leadership styles in relation to follower readiness, conflict resolution and negotiation styles. Skills of emotional self-regulation, active listening and motivational interviewing will be incorporated. This presentation will be both didactic and encouraging of group participation.

    Introduction to DEI Work

    4:30 PM - 5:00 PM

    Presentation Description

The national (perhaps international) recognition that systemic racism permeates the healthcare field at every level is, in my view, the most noteworthy advancement in medicine in this decade. The tragic death of Mr. George Floyd and the disparities in care, morbidity, and mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed flaws in our provision of equitable healthcare. They were a catalyst that allowed many to examine their role in perpetuating racism. They also triggered an examination of how socially constructed labels become determinants of health, driven by racist practices and policies that negatively impact specific groups. Thus, in this “decade of reckoning,” implementing anti-racist ideals and practices has been the natural, moral, and only reasonable, actionable response to eliminate the disparities created by these socially constructed artifices. Here lies the mission of this generation of healthcare professionals.
The American Headache Society has reviewed, reconciled, and amended its leadership, policies, and procedures to demonstrate its commitment to equity in all aspects that intersect with healthcare. By forming the DEI Taskforce, the AHS created a structure and assembled a team to advance its DEI Vision and Mission. This presentation introduces best practices, challenges, and opportunities to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Headache Medicine.
